Communication Access Realtime Translation (CART)
Communication Access Realtime Translation (CART) is a word-for-word speech to text translation for people who need assistance with communication access. It is provided by a court reporter who has been specifically trained to provide this service. CART can benefit people who are late-deafened, oral deaf, hard of hearing, or who have cochlear implants. Deaf individuals may also use CART in a variety of situations.
Unlike a traditional notetaker, someone who summarizes information, CART provides a complete translation of all spoken words and environmental sounds. This allows the deaf consumer to decide for their self what information is important to them.
A CART provider uses a steno machine, notebook computer and realtime software to provide instant speech to text translation on a computer monitor or other form of display. The translation may be for the benefit of an individual consumer or a larger group in a variety of settings. A CART provider should also be sensitive to the varying needs of a consumer and have training in conveying the speaker’s message. Providing environmental sounds increases the understanding of the event for the consumer and allows for a more fulfilling experience .
CART Environments: Classrooms, theatres, town or business meetings, doctor appointments, conventions and conferences, courtrooms, churches, or any other venue where requested.
